National Aviation company Limited, Owner of the Air India, India’s national Airlines have decided to give a thought to reviving the Now defunct Vayudoot service, which was launched in 1981 to offer Cheap Flights to suburban cities of India, following a low costs airlines model.
Vayudoot was initially launched as a Indian Airlines to connect rest of India from the northeast provinces thought soon the Vayudoot service was expanded to cover more than 100 destinations. But the service hade to be discontinued due to financial crisis of the Air India and also due to the fact that economic condition of India at that time meant that there were not enough demand for this type of services. In the new proposed structure Vayudoot is conceptualized as a feeder service thereby bringing traffic from small suburban towns to larger cities and state capitals. It has to be noted that the service still retains its brand value and can be an asset for the Air India as demand for low costs airlines are increasing due to economic growth in suburban areas.
Also better connectivity with all areas of the country is a necessity as Air India is going to become a star alliance member and hence expected to get passengers from the Star Alliance network. At present the Vayudoot service will connect Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and the northeast region with state capitals. The aircraft in service will be 15-20 seat, 50-seat, 120-180 seat and 300-seat depending on the Airlines Booking demands generating for the service.
